Optical Fibers: A Modern Art Piece in Residence Design

Bringing Splendid Views and Dynamic Ambience to Urban Living

The design team led by Yu-Wen Wang has created a stunning residence that seamlessly blends art, architecture, and technology. By harnessing natural light and shadows, they have transformed the space into a dynamic modern art piece. With the clever use of optical fibers, the design team has connected different areas of the residence, creating a visually captivating experience.

The main concept of the house revolves around lights and shadows. The public areas, such as the living room, study, and dining room, flow into each other without any partitions, creating a clear and bright ambience. One standout feature is the writing desk covered with an L-shaped sofa, metaphorically separating the living room and study while maintaining a sense of connection. The sofa faces the TV wall and the dining room, bridging the different areas and enhancing their functionality.

To achieve a modest yet elegant ambience, the design team has used a color palette of white, grey, wood, and stone as the key visual elements. The TV wall, constructed with stone, metal, and wood materials, exudes a sense of opulence. The starry galaxy grey base color adds an atmosphere of sophistication, complemented by titanium-plated metal accents that provide reflectivity and transparency. To counterbalance the coolness of the stone and metal, warm wooden cabinets have been incorporated, infusing the space with a cozy touch.

The study features a meticulously planned display wall, utilizing the perfect proportion to highlight the grain texture of the materials. Wood, fine deck ornaments, and black spray paint create delightful visual effects. The hollow cabinets are designed with a staggered method, combining virtual and real elements. The back panel, coated with metal paint, serves as a visual focal point while connecting and echoing the mood of the TV wall.

Located in Taiwan, this project was completed in June 2020. The design team's research focused on the interplay between scenery and sunlight. By conceptualizing the public areas as transparent and natural spaces, they aimed to create a seamless flow between different functions. The living room, study, and kitchen maintain an open vision, while the use of dissimilar materials creates a harmonious connection between the spaces.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was the low beam-columns in the bedroom, which created a sense of oppression. To address this, the designer planned an inclined ceiling to hide the beam-columns and incorporated strip lights for enhanced visual effects. Straight lines were used to alleviate the pressure of the beams and pillars, ensuring the overall space remained visually appealing and engaging.

By utilizing lines and sunlight, the design team has crafted a low-key luxury residence that stands out. The interplay between different materials and the clever use of optical fibers create a visually captivating experience. The hollow cabinets and interlaced display cabinets in the study extend into the kitchen, while the wooden ceiling at the entrance spans the corridors of the public domain. This meticulous attention to detail ensures a seamless and visually stunning living experience.

This exceptional design by Yu-Wen Wang and their team at CHENYI INTERIOR STUDIO was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2022. Recognized for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features, this residence showcases the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. It provides fulfillment and positive feelings, contributing to a better world.
